Count Your Blessings

Several years ago, a group of Christians had travelled to the Caribbean to evangelize and worship with the saints in that region. While on the Island of Tobago, their local host took them to a leper colony. While visiting with those patients they had a worship service. The residents filed in and took their seats on the pews in the assembly hall and some of the visiting Christians took turns leading songs.

Jack, one of the song leaders, said, "We have time for one more song. Does anyone have a favourite?" He had noticed one patient when she came in had sat on the back row facing the opposite direction and had thought it unusual. When he asked for a favourite song, this woman finally turned around to face the front, Jack said, "I found myself staring into the most hideous face that I had ever seen. She had no nose and no lips. Just bare teeth, like a skull." As she turned she raised her hand in the air. Except it wasn't a hand, it was a bony end of her arm, just a stub. As poor Jack was trying to take this in she spoke, "Could you sing Count Your Many Blessings?"

Jack lost it! He stumbled down from the pulpit and out the door into the yard, with tears in his eyes. Someone else stepped up and led the song, and a friend went out and put an arm around Jack. "You'll never be able to sing that song again, will you Jack?"

"Oh, yeah, I'll sing it," Jack said, "But not in the same way."

How often do you count your blessings and name them one by one? How often are you surprised by what the Lord has done in blessing you?" More important, how are you saying "thank you" to the Lord?

Psalm 115:15

You are blessed of the Lord which made heaven and earth.
